  • Great Britain's regulated Gross Gambling Yield reached £17.5bn in the year to March 2026, a 4.4 percent annual increase.
  • Remote betting, casino, and bingo generated £8.3bn, rising 6.9 percent over the same twelve-month timeframe.
  • The regulator has undergone major leadership transitions, including the appointment of Ruth Evans as Chair and Sarah Fox joining the executive team.

The British regulated gambling sector reached £17.5 billion in Gross Gambling Yield (GGY) for the year ending in March 2026, marking an increase of 4.4 percent compared to the previous twelve months. The data was set out by Sarah Gardner, Acting Chief Executive of the Gambling Commission, during a keynote address delivered at the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR) 2026 conference in Lima, Peru.

Gardner, who ordinarily serves as the regulator's Deputy Chief Executive, detailed the latest market yields alongside adult participation statistics and internal governance updates. The regulatory gathering in Lima also highlighted the contribution of outgoing IAGR President Ben Haden, who works alongside Gardner at the British Commission.

Commercial performance and remote sector growth

The commercial totals for Great Britain illustrated continued financial expansion across both digital and land-based sectors. When all lottery sales were removed from the headline evaluation, total Gross Gambling Yield stood at £13.2 billion for the year ending in March 2026, representing a 4.7 percent increase on the year before.

The online market was a primary driver of overall yield. Remote betting, casino, and bingo operations in Great Britain generated £8.3 billion in the year ending in March 2026. This total represented a 6.9 percent year-on-year climb, outpacing the wider market's baseline growth rate.

Gambling Survey for Great Britain findings

Gardner also referenced participation findings established through the Gambling Survey for Great Britain, which measures activity across a population of more than 67 million people. According to the research, 47 percent of surveyed individuals aged 18 and over took part in gambling activity during the past four weeks.

However, overall engagement changed significantly once non-commercial and draw-based participants were filtered. When respondents who solely participate in lottery draws were excluded, adult gambling participation over the previous four weeks was 27 percent.

Senior leadership changes at the Commission

The address in Lima coincided with substantial changes across the Commission's board and leadership structure following the term of former Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes. The UK Government has appointed Ruth Evans as the new Chair of the Gambling Commission on a five-year term, taking over from Charles Counsell, who had previously served as Interim Chair.

At the executive level, Tim Miller announced his departure from the Gambling Commission following a ten-year tenure with the regulatory body.

Sarah Fox has joined the Commission to absorb the majority of Miller's former portfolio, moving from her previous role leading the Gambling team within the UK Government. In addition to these responsibilities, Fox has assumed direct oversight for the regulation of the National Lottery.
