  • Alex Frost is to conclude his tenure as CEO at the end of 2026, with former DraftKings executive James Coxon appointed as his successor.
  • The group will scale back investment in its loss-making direct-to-consumer digital division as part of a major strategic review.
  • A renewed focus will be placed on UK and international pool betting, with a particular emphasis on the World Pool network.

The UK Tote Group has confirmed that its Chief Executive Officer, Alex Frost, will be stepping down from the role at the end of 2026. Frost has been in a leadership position with the organisation for almost ten years, a period which included the formation of the UK Tote Group in 2019 and its subsequent acquisition of the historic Tote business from Betfred.

Succeeding Frost will be James Coxon, an executive with significant international experience in the gambling sector. Coxon most recently served as Vice President of International for DraftKings. His previous senior leadership roles include Chief Operating Officer at Gaming Innovation Group (GiG), as well as Commercial Director and Director of Business Development during his time at Scientific Games.

The announcement, made by Tote Group Chair John Williamson, outlined a clear transition plan for the outgoing CEO. Following his departure from the executive role, Frost will continue to contribute to the company, initially working as a Non-Executive Director throughout 2027 before assuming a permanent Non-Executive Director position from 2028 onwards.

Strategic Pivot to Pool Betting

The leadership transition is taking place alongside a major strategic pivot for the business, which Frost is set to initiate as one of his final projects. The new strategy will see the group significantly scale back its investment in its direct-to-consumer digital operations, a division which has been operating at a loss.

As a result of this change, the company will renew its focus on its core product of UK and international pool betting. A key component of this renewed emphasis will be the World Pool, the global commingling network led by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), which has been central to the Tote's recent international expansion.

This restructuring will have an impact on staffing levels. The company confirmed that the move away from the digital business will lead to job losses in that division. Concurrently, some new job roles are expected to be created within the group's business division to support the new strategic direction.

Frost's tenure has been defined by the revitalisation of the Tote, an institution that has been in operation since 1928. The UK Tote Group was specifically created as a vehicle for its purchase, with the financial backing of the Alizeti racehorse owners’ consortium, completing the acquisition in 2019.

A significant achievement during this period was the internationalisation of the Tote brand. Under Frost's guidance, the Tote secured a crucial partnership to join the HKJC-led World Pool, giving it access to a global network and substantially expanding its international racing offer.
