Stake Secures Alberta iGaming and Sports Betting Licence
The operator has been approved by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission and plans to launch next week, continuing its expansion in the Americas following entries in Mexico and Argentina.

- Stake has been awarded an iGaming and sports betting licence by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC).
- A launch in the Canadian province of Alberta is scheduled for next Monday, 12 October.
- The move comes after a recent exit from the British market and regulatory issues in Nigeria.
Alberta Entry Signals Canadian Ambitions
Operator Stake has successfully obtained an iGaming and sports betting licence in Canada, securing approval from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC). The licence permits the company to offer both online casino games and sports wagering products to consumers within the province. According to the company, it is preparing for a swift market entry, with the launch of its Alberta-facing platform expected to take place next Monday, 12 October. The AGLC is the provincial crown agency responsible for regulating the gaming, liquor, and cannabis industries in Alberta, making its approval a critical step for any operator wishing to enter the market legally.
The move into Alberta marks a significant milestone for Stake's North American expansion plans. As one of Canada’s most populous provinces, with major urban centres in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta represents a key commercial market for online gambling operators. The entry of a prominent international brand like Stake is expected to introduce a new dynamic and increase competition within the province's digital gaming landscape. This market has been steadily evolving since the federal government passed legislation to legalise single-event sports betting, delegating regulatory oversight to individual provinces like Alberta.
Stake's Canadian operations are being managed locally, with Kris Abbott serving in the role of country manager for Stake Canada. To support its entry and ensure compliance, the company has also appointed Birgitte Sand to its Canadian board. The inclusion of established personnel with deep regulatory and market-specific experience is a common strategy for operators navigating the complex, province-by-province regulatory framework of the Canadian online gambling market. It signals an intention to build a sustainable and compliant business within the AGLC's framework.
Global Strategy: Americas Focus Amidst Other Exits
The approval in Alberta is the latest in a series of successful market entries for Stake across the Americas, indicating a clear strategic focus on the region. The operator recently gained regulatory approval to launch in Mexico, as well as in the autonomous province of Buenos Aires in Argentina. This pattern suggests a concerted effort to establish a strong foothold in newly regulated and emerging jurisdictions throughout North, Central, and South America.
This expansionary phase in the Americas contrasts with the company's recent activities in other parts of the world. Notably, Stake has withdrawn its services from the British market, ceasing all operations in what is one of the globe's most established and competitive online gambling jurisdictions. This exit represents a significant strategic shift for the company.
In addition to its withdrawal from Great Britain, Stake has encountered regulatory headwinds elsewhere. Authorities in Nigeria recently declared that the company was operating illegally within the African nation. These developments provide a wider context to the company's global strategy, which appears to involve prioritising growth in the Americas while consolidating or facing challenges in other international markets.
